How relay theft actually works in a Bedford car park

Relay theft has almost nothing in common with the car crime most people picture, and it is now the way most keyless cars in Bedford are taken. There is no broken glass, no hotwiring, no alarm going off across the car park. In most cases it takes under a minute and the only evidence is an empty bay.

The method needs two people and two boxes. Your car key, sitting on the hall table or in a coat pocket by the door, is not asleep. It periodically listens for and answers a low-power radio challenge from the car. That is the whole point of keyless entry: walk up, the car recognises the key, the door opens. The first box is a receiver. Held close to your front door, your porch window, or the wall behind which your keys hang, it picks up that conversation. The second box is a transmitter, standing next to the car, repeating what the first box hears. The car cannot tell distance. It only asks whether the correct key is answering, and the answer arrives, so it unlocks and permits a start.

In Bedford the geography does the rest. If you leave your car at the station for the 8am Thameslink, it sits in the same bay until half six in the evening. Nobody who parks there expects to walk past their car at lunchtime. That means a car identified in the morning can be watched, checked and taken hours later with no risk of the owner appearing. The overflow rows and the quieter corners of the multi-storey are the obvious candidates: low footfall, poor sightlines, and a straight run out to the A421 or the A6 within two minutes.

Driveway theft in the residential parts of town works the same way in reverse. Modern estates at Wixams and the newer builds around Shortstown put the car within a few metres of the front door, and the keys are usually within a few metres of that. The distance the relay needs to bridge is trivially small. Terraced streets in Queens Park and Castle Road are just as workable — an offender standing at your gate looks like someone checking their phone.

The common advice is a signal-blocking pouch, and it is genuinely worth doing. The problem is that it depends on a person remembering, every time, for years — including the spare key that lives in a kitchen drawer and never gets thought about. One evening where the fob goes on the worktop instead is all it takes.

The reliable fix is to make the fob insufficient. An aftermarket immobiliser such as Ghost II or CAN Phantom adds a step the key does not know about: a sequence entered on buttons already in the car, or a code on the vehicle's own data network. Relay the signal all you like — the car unlocks, the engine turns and dies, and the vehicle stays where it is. There is no siren, nothing to cut, and nothing a diagnostic tool plugged in at the footwell will reveal.

If you commute from Bedford station and drive anything keyless from the last ten years, assume the method is available to whoever wants to use it, and remove the thing it relies on.
